The Header Links Menu
The Header Links Menu is present on all of your school website pages. The menu supports dropdown links, which means that you can put a lot of links in a fairly small area. The number of Top Menu items (the words that display on the menu bar at all times) has been set so as to fit in the optimal screen size for your site.
Because your site is scalable and will fit on tablets and mobile devices, the Header Links Menu will start to wrap as soon as you view your site on smaller screens. If you add many more links that are set to Top Menus, you will find that your site's appearance suffers because the menu will wrap to a new line even when viewed at full size.
The Header Links Menu is editable only by School Webmasters (School Site Administrators) via the Site Administrator Console, which is a form located in the root of your school's website container in FirstClass.

Below is an image of the Site Administrator Console's Header/Footer Links tab, where you can make the changes you need to your menu.
The red numbers on the form image denote key aspects of the form that you should understand before making any changes. The legend below the form image will take you to the various related subjects and provide detail about that area.

1 Add / Remove / Insert Rows
If you click on the Add New Row button, a new empty menu row will be added at the very end of the list of existing menu items.
If you wish to insert a link in between two existing links, click on the link row BELOW where you want the new link to go and click on the Insert New Row button.
You can delete a given row by clicking anywhere in the row and then clicking on the Remove Selected Row button.
2 Top Menu Checkbox
Items with Top Menu checked will appear on the menu bar at all times.
All subsequent menu items below a checked item will fall in under that Top Menu in a drop down list until another checked item is encountered, which will start a new set of drop down menu items.
IMPORTANT: For mobile device compatibility, do not associate items that have Top Menu checked with links.
3 Link Display Text
This field contains the text that will be displayed on the web to represent the links in your menu. Keep words to a minimum, especially for Top Menu items.
4 Icon or Image Path/Filename
This is an advanced feature of the menu and is meant to be used to replace a word representing a link with an image. Using images for menu items is NOT advisable however, because screen readers and other accessability software will be confused by an image. In the above example, only one link is represented by an image, and that is the Home Page link. The image file is stored in an area not accessible to webmasters because it is shared accross all websites in the district.
It is recommended that you do NOT use images for menu items.
5 Link To
This field contains the actual link that will be followed when a user clicks on the menu item. It is important to get this link exactly right or it will not work.
All internal links - links to pages and containers within the current school website can be made without using the full web syntax. However, all links made by the site administrator must be absolute links that have a path from the root site container.
This means that, for example, a link to the athletics Home Page, located in a container called 'Athletics', which, in turn is located in a container called 'Departments', would have to be entered as follows:
The first / is an indication to the browser that the path is starting from the root of the site. Each container down the list has to be listed, in order, with another / separating them. The last item in the link will be the name of the page you wish to open. The final / in the example above is not required, however it is best practice to end with this / character in order to tell the browser to stop looking further.
Note: linking to any page in the site called "Home Page" does not require that you enter that page name as it will automatically open, however, it is best practice to specifically name all end points, including Home Page as performance is better when this is done.
If you enter a # character in the link to field, AND if that row is a sub menu row (ie NOT checked as a top menu), RWD will format the display text for that row differently and this can be used to group sets of links that are all within the same submenu drop down.
6 Open In
This field determines if the link will open in a new window / tab in the browser or if will replace the current page. Generally, use the same window unless the link is to another website.
7 Special Format
This field is for advanced situations and should not normally be modified. Unexpected results will be seen if any setting other than None (RWD Page) is set.
